The Innovative Manufacturing and Materials (IMM) Programme is an interdisciplinary and industry-facing programme drawing on specialist expertise in manufacturing, materials, product and process development, business and commercialisation from across the University of Auckland. The IMM Programme, currently led by Associate Professor Mark Battley (formerly Professor Simon Bickerton and before that Professor Xun Xu), received funding (a University of Auckland Strategic Research Initiative Fund) for a five year period (2016 – 2020) with the aim of establishing a Manufacturing, Design and Entrepreneurship Centre of Research Excellence (MaDE CoRE). Whilst the CoRE funding bid was not successful, the national MaDE Network, initiated in 2016, has since been established and is currently led by Professor Olaf Diegel. MaD for the Future 2017 was the network’s inaugural national conference with subsequent successful physical events hosted in 2018, 2019 and 2020, with an additional digital event in 2020 during the pandemic. The pandemic circumstances forced postponement of MaDE2021 to January 2022, hence MaDE2022 has been enabled by surplus project funds, as the fifth national event – to be hosted in Auckland, as we continue to build and refine who we are and what we do, with the aim of becoming self-sustaining.
