The Innovative Manufacturing and Materials (IMM) Programme is an interdisciplinary and industry-facing research programme drawing on specialist expertise in manufacturing, materials, product and process development, business and commercialisation from across the University of Auckland. The IMM Programme, led by Professor Simon Bickerton, received funding (a University of Auckland Strategic Research Initiative Fund) for a five year period (2016 – 2020) with the aim of establishing a Manufacturing and Design Centre of Research Excellence (MaD CoRE). This CoRE will undertake high quality scientific research to assist New Zealand to be an innovation-led economy and society. Paramount to this process, is the establishment of a national MaD Network which is a newly formed community of New Zealand researchers in manufacturing and design, working in close collaboration with industry. This cross-disciplinary researcher network will be focused on New Zealand’s manufacturing economy of the future. Development of the MaD Network, which includes an annual MaD Conference is led by the IMM Programme.
ATEED is tasked with driving innovation and transforming the local economy, so that Auckland is a desirable place to visit, live, work, play, invest and do business. ATEED began operating in November 2010 when the Auckland Council structure was established following the amalgamation of the previous regional council and seven city and district councils in the Auckland region. The economic powerhouse of New Zealand, Auckland has a population of 1.5 million and contributes 35 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Auckland’s population is expected to grow by another one million by 2040, providing a stimulus for further economic expansion and opportunities in the region.
